First Nations Ceremonial Headdress

With all the 100people2017 stuff going on, I forgot to post this sketch that I did last week at our museum.  I’ve looked at this headdress several times and each time I convinced myself that I wasn’t up to depicted all those feathers with pen and ink.  In a crazy moment I started drawing it.  The biggest challenge was keeping my eyes from crossing as I tried to follow the feather contours.  I was pleased with the outcome, though.  Hope you like it.

  1. When your picture first appeared on the screen, it look like a photo of this headdress itself. Then i noticed that, this a drawing. It’s very nice to achieve such a challaenge. I love the way you simplify the objects.

  2. “keeping your eyes focused” … That was the first thing that came to mind!
I thought to myself ‘how did he keep his eyes on track’?

I would have had eye wobbles

So well done Larry, you must be very happy with this one.

    • ..anyone who draws knows that cross-eyed feeling one gets with subjects like this one. I was pretty happy with the results as I’d walked by that headdress a number of time, thinking it might be difficult.

  3. It works. I know that daunting feeling when I wince at tackling a lot of detail …. how to simplify enough. You did a great job.
